President Lula stated that Putin will be invited to the G20 meetings, but did not rule out the possibility of his arrest due to the International Criminal Court’s warrant
Months after assuring that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not be arrested if he visited Brazil, due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Russian leader, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has changed his stance and warned Putin about the risks of visiting Brazil.
Lula, during a press conference in Germany on Monday (4), said that Brazil will invite Putin to the G20 meetings in 2024, but emphasized that “he has a process” and “must assess the consequences”.
“Putin will be invited. Whether he will come or not… He has a process, he has to assess the consequences. It’s not for me to say. It is a judicial decision, and a president does not judge judicial decisions. He either complies or doesn’t comply,” Lula stated.
“And if he does attend, he knows what will happen. It may happen or may not happen. He [Russia] is not part of this court, the United States is not either. Brazil is, Brazil is a signatory,” he said.
Lula had previously stated on September 9 that Putin was not at risk of being arrested if he traveled to Brazil. Brazil assumed the presidency of the G20 last Friday.
